Joint Call for Solutions from the Tripartite Summit
The President of the Greek Cypriot Administration, Nikos Christodoulides, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed a common view on ensuring security in the Eastern Mediterranean as a result of their summit held in El Alamein, Egypt. The summit aims to enhance cooperation among regional countries.
The leaders emphasized the importance of taking steps to delimit maritime jurisdiction areas within the frameworks of international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Their support for United Nations efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus issue stood out as an example of interstate cooperation.
Common Steps for Security and Stability
The joint statement released noted that existing disputes in the region need to be resolved through political and diplomatic means. It was also stated that actions that escalate tensions and activities threatening regional stability should be rejected. In this context, respect for national sovereignty and independence was highlighted.
The leaders present at the summit also addressed the need to strengthen energy cooperation. Proposed projects for connecting the energy infrastructures of Egypt and Greece aim to enhance the region’s energy security. In particular, it was emphasized that recent developments concerning the integration of Cyprus gas fields into Egypt’s gas infrastructure should be considered.
The three leaders expressed their satisfaction with the ongoing efforts of the United Nations regarding the Cyprus issue, sharing their belief that a resolution to the Cyprus situation would increase peace and stability in the region. In this regard, the necessity for relevant stakeholders to work together was emphasized.
Energy projects were also among the key items on the summit’s agenda. Notably, developing electricity connection projects and enhancing energy security in the Eastern Mediterranean emerged as significant goals.
This summit is viewed as a significant step towards improving relationships among countries in the region. The three leaders aim to take steps towards achieving regional stability through further cooperation and joint projects.
