KAMUSEN Calls for Action on Cyprus Meat Price Disparities

The Turkish Cypriot Public Servants Union (KAMUSEN) has taken action regarding the stark differences in meat prices between the south and north of the island. KAMUSEN President Metin Atan argued that this situation exacerbates the economic burden on citizens and hinders the government from fulfilling its fundamental duties. He emphasized that these price disparities must be subject to comprehensive inspection and urged for an urgent resolution to the issue.

Price Disparities and the Burden on Citizens

Atan pointed out that while the average price for one kilogram of meat in southern Cyprus is around 600 TL, in the north, it ranges from 1800 to 1900 TL. He stated that this difference creates a significant burden, especially for citizens living on minimum wage. According to Atan, the government’s primary responsibility should be to protect its citizens and support them in battling economic hardships.

He noted that the issue is not solely related to pricing but also highlights efficiency problems within the meat distribution chain. Atan stressed the need to strengthen inspection mechanisms to enhance transparency, thereby protecting consumer rights.

Criticism of the Number and Salaries of MPs

Atan also drew attention to the upcoming electoral process, predicting that citizens will evaluate the promises of political parties more cautiously. He criticized the parliamentary work structure, asserting that MPs should work five days a week, and those absent should have deductions from their salaries.

He stated that the existence of 50 MPs in northern Cyprus should be reconsidered, emphasizing that the system must be viewed holistically. Everything, from the number of MPs to work regulations, salaries to responsibilities, needs thorough evaluation.

Atan argued that this discussion should not be reduced to just MP salaries and that the quality of public services received in return for taxes paid by citizens should also be scrutinized. He stressed the need for the government to protect ordinary citizens rather than serving the interests of powerful sectors.

KAMUSEN’s president highlighted that the government is obliged to protect minimum wage earners, private sector workers, and small tradespeople, asserting the state’s duty is to prevent citizens from being crushed economically. In this context, in addition to price inspections, strengthening the social security system would also be a significant step.

Following Atan’s call, the issue is expected to be brought to the agenda of the Parliament, and coordination among relevant institutions will be sought. KAMUSEN announced that it would conduct the necessary inspections and continue to monitor complaints regarding this issue.
