President Nikos Hristodulidis made significant statements regarding the Cyprus issue, stating that the main objective is to resume negotiations from where they left off. Hristodulidis made this statement after a recent memorial ceremony.
According to a report by Politis, the upcoming United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York represents a new unofficial turning point for progress on the Cyprus issue. Prior to his new meeting with President Tufan Erhürman, Hristodulidis also expressed a cautiously optimistic attitude towards the Cyprus problem.
Furthermore, the return of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Representative to Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, will contribute to increased lobbying efforts to ensure that preliminary outcomes are achieved before a new five-party meeting can take place. This situation could create a hopeful atmosphere before the UN General Assembly meeting.
Hristodulidis emphasized the importance of information that will emerge as a result of intensive talks, announcing that Holguin will be on the island during the first week of September. During this time, separate meetings with the UN Secretary-General are planned, indicating a shift to a new phase of informal negotiations.
Hristodulidis expressed that they are fully prepared for broader discussions if the UN Secretary-General deems it necessary and pointed out the Greek side’s obligation to do everything possible. He specifically asserted that any potential failure will not originate from the Greek side, reiterating their determination to resolve the issue.
Additionally, Hristodulidis referred to their initial discussions regarding the Cyprus issue that took place last week, noting that the essence, methodology, and Confidence-Building Measures (CBMs) regarding the matter were discussed.
