On the occasion of the 52nd anniversary of the Second Peace Operation, Greek politicians released various messages criticizing the current situation. The President of the Greek Administration, Nikos Christodoulides, alleged that Turkey has illegally occupied certain areas of the Republic of Cyprus. In a written statement, he noted that peace negotiations in Geneva are ongoing on this anniversary, expressing that Turkey’s occupation activities on the island have intensified.
Christodoulides pointed out that the closed area of Varosha, Morphou, and many villages remain under occupation, emphasizing that thousands of people have been forcibly displaced from their homes. He remarked that the pain after 52 years is still fresh, asserting that the current situation is unacceptable. In this context, he added that they respectfully commemorate those who lost their lives.
The President of the Greek Parliament, Annita Dimitriou, emphasized that the incomplete state of the homeland can never be accepted. She stated that they will continue to demand a fair solution, highlighting their determination in this regard. She drew attention to the importance of continuing the struggle for the island’s integrity.
Meanwhile, AKEL Secretary-General Stefanos Stefanu, during a commemoration event, stated that his party would not give up on seeking solutions. Speaking in front of the monument at the Derinya barricade, he delivered the message that the struggle will continue. In this context, he emphasized their constant efforts to reach a solution.
The so-called Mayor of Varosha, Simos Ioannu, also remarked that the situation has not changed 52 years after the occupation of Varosha. Expressing that new developments continue to arise, Ioannu questioned what kind of solution path the current situation requires.
All these developments signify a critical period for the future of Cyprus. The Greek side continues its search for international support to ensure the reunification of the island within a pluralistic peace framework.
The 52nd anniversary of the Peace Operation is viewed as a period that not only seeks solutions in Cyprus but also offers an opportunity to refresh the collective memory. The urgency of the steps that need to be taken for peace is clearly reflected in the statements of politicians.
