Following the maritime accident in Cyprus, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel described the incident, resulting from the capsizing of a ship, as “the largest maritime disaster in Cyprus.” Üstel reported that 8 individuals had been detained and emphasized that search and rescue operations were continuing with all available resources.
Stating that all state resources were mobilized from the very first moment of the incident, Üstel expressed that four Coast Guard boats, two helicopters, and a patrol ship from the Turkish Peace Forces were deployed along with numerous diving teams. He also announced that investigations into the causes underlying these losses had begun immediately.
Detention Process
Üstel indicated that the investigation had been initiated due to the detainment of the ship’s captain and 7 other crew members, asserting that all aspects of the incident would be thoroughly examined. “Every aspect of this incident will be investigated. If there is even the slightest negligence, it will be revealed,” he stated, asserting that those responsible would face consequences.
He referred to the disaster as a responsibility owed to the state and the memory of the martyrs, offering condolences to the families of the deceased. Wishing for a swift recovery for the injured, he noted that their efforts were focused on finding the missing as soon as possible.
State’s Response
Üstel confirmed that search and rescue activities were continuing with full force and stated that the most detailed investigation would be conducted to clarify the situation. He reiterated that all units were working hard concerning the missing persons involved in the incident. He underlined that any potential negligence would be made clear.
