Strategy of the Cyprus Government
The Republic of Cyprus government has started preparations to join the Schengen Area without resolving the Cyprus issue. The newspaper Kathimerini, published in Southern Cyprus, extensively discussed the government’s aspirations for Schengen, claiming that this could be feasible without resolving the issue. According to the report, the government aims to assure the EU of Schengen membership by removing the resolution topic from the negotiation table.
Relations with Brussels
Kathimerini noted that Nicosia provided clarifying information to relevant EU bodies assuring that resolving the Cyprus issue would not harm Schengen membership. In this context, the government’s efforts to strengthen relations with Brussels are noteworthy. The Christodoulides government is focusing on steps for Schengen membership without waiting for a resolution to the Cyprus issue.
According to information in the newspaper, an unnamed Cyprus representative highlighted legal and political matters concerning the Green Line and British bases. It was conveyed in these discussions that the challenges in resolving the Cyprus issue should not negatively affect the Schengen Area.
The Christodoulides government has taken a new step in defining its policies by separating the Cyprus issue resolution process from Schengen membership. Previous governments had not taken such an initiative.
Furthermore, it has been reported that two separate expert groups related to the Green Line and British bases have been established, which are collaborating with the European Commission. These expert groups aim to ensure the functionality of the Schengen process by addressing issues in line with current conditions.
