The Secretary General of the Cyprus Turkish Physicians Association (CTPA), Sinem Şığıt İkiz, highlighted the negative effects of increasing incidents of violence and security concerns on society and urged authorities to implement urgent preventive policies to ensure safety.
The Right to a Safe Life
İkiz stated that one of the state’s primary responsibilities is to protect the right to life, expressing, “Everyone’s right to live without fear, to raise their children safely, and to feel secure in public spaces is fundamental.” She added that the feeling of insecurity within society has become a significant public health issue that negatively affects not only individuals but also the psychological and social well-being of everyone.
Violence Cases and Public Safety
Recent incidents involving violence against women, sexual assaults, and traffic accidents make it difficult for citizens to feel safe. İkiz pointed out that such attacks not only affect the victims but also undermine the overall sense of security in society. She stated, “Living in an environment ruled by fear should not be a common right for any of us.”
The CTPA Secretary General emphasized the importance of developing social policies aimed at preventing crimes rather than just responding to incidents. She stressed the need for an effective oversight mechanism and the efficient functioning of the law through a multidimensional approach.
Population Growth and Insecurity
Another factor directly affecting people’s living standards is uncontrolled population growth. İkiz expressed that this situation increases the sense of social insecurity, stating that planned policies should be developed considering these issues in essential areas such as health, education, and security.
Additionally, she noted that effectively monitoring the legal statuses of individuals entering the country plays a critical role in maintaining public order and societal security. In this context, she emphasized that the registration and monitoring processes for individuals entering should be carried out thoroughly.
Developing Adequate Measures
Finally, İkiz reminded that women often experience violence from their immediate surroundings, such as partners or relatives, and stressed the need to strengthen mechanisms aimed at preventing violence. She stated, “Our movement should take preventive steps and create a secure environment.”
