The Energy Committee of the Greek Parliament has thoroughly reviewed details regarding the “Great Sea Interconnector” (GSI) project. Following the meeting, it was announced that the project’s cost is expected to exceed €1.9 billion. This development has garnered significant attention in the Greek press and has sparked public debate.
According to reports from Politis newspaper, some of the major challenges facing the GSI project include Turkey’s stance and various geopolitical issues. While emphasizing the need to focus on the economic aspects of the project, it is noted that political will is crucial for overcoming these challenges.
Research Related to the Project and NAVTEX Publication
Greek Energy Minister Mihalis Damianos highlighted the need to publish a NAVTEX for conducting research in the Aegean Sea in the later stages of the project. This NAVTEX is expected to be published by Greek authorities in the coming weeks and within 2026.
Damianos stated that these investigations are vital for seabed mapping and accurately determining cable routes. He also emphasized the importance of detailing the existing infrastructure in the area.
Turkish-Greek Relations and Developments
The newspaper highlighted that the period of NAVTEX publication will be closely monitored, considering the current tensions in Turkish-Greek relations. Similar research conducted in 2025 was halted due to the presence of Turkish warships in the region.
During the Greek Parliament Energy Committee meeting, the costs of the GSI and the Greek government’s views on the project were discussed. Greek Finance Minister Makis Keravnos and Energy Minister Mihalis Damianos provided insights regarding the sustainability review conducted by the European Investment Bank. The results of this review are expected to be announced before the end of the year.
