Today, the Republic Assembly will hold an extraordinary meeting. The session will discuss the proposal to hold general and local elections together on December 6. Organized at the request of the UBP and CTP parties, the meeting will also address the removal of the mixed voting system to facilitate holding both elections on the same day.
Among the main agenda items of the meeting is the approval of amendments to the Fiber Optic Protocol. Additionally, a proposal for the establishment of an investigative committee concerning the recent maritime disaster will also be examined. Sıla Usar İncirli, the leader of the main opposition Republican Turkish Party (CTP), has directed 13 questions to the government regarding the disaster and is awaiting answers.
Research Proposals Regarding the Maritime Disaster
During the 3rd Extraordinary Session of Parliament, the causes of the passenger ship disaster that occurred off the coast of Kyrenia on August 30 will be investigated. Preliminary discussions will take place regarding two separate research proposals put forth by the CTP and UBP. Some deputies affiliated with the CTP Group have requested an investigation into the causes of the disaster, as well as the permitting and supervision processes, along with potential negligence and responsibilities.
Moreover, a proposal presented by UBP Chairman and Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, along with DP Chairman Fikri Ataoğlu, also calls for a parliamentary investigation to research potential negligence and supervisory processes related to the ship. These issues are among the central agenda items of today’s extraordinary meeting.
Time and Agenda of the Meeting
The Republic Assembly General Assembly will convene at 10:00 for the extraordinary meeting. During this session, the elections and the maritime disaster will be thoroughly evaluated alongside other agenda items.
