The leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), Sıla Usar İncirli, stated that the parliament should convene urgently following a maritime accident off the coast of Girne that affected many lives, and called for the establishment of an investigative committee. İncirli’s call was supported by a research proposal she announced shortly after the incident.
According to information provided by CTP’s press office, İncirli held a meeting with the President of the Parliament, Ziya Öztürkler. The meeting was also attended by Parliament Vice President Fazilet Özdenefe and MP Ürün Solyalı. At the press conference held after the meeting, İncirli made statements regarding the scale of the tragedy and the measures that need to be taken.
During the discussion, İncirli emphasized the critical importance of necessary inspection mechanisms to protect human life. The tragedy highlighted that the maritime industry should be assessed not only from an economic perspective but also in terms of safety of life.
Recalling her earlier remarks about the need for the parliament to convene to discuss public safety, İncirli criticized, saying, “That day we were told, ‘This country is safe.’ However, they did not attend that meeting.” İncirli pointed out that safety should be present in all areas and that the state must fulfill its responsibilities regarding every detail of human life properly.
İncirli stressed that it was unnecessary to wait longer on the importance of the proposal submitted to the parliament, stating, “We do not wish to declare anyone guilty or interfere with the ongoing judicial investigation. What needs to be done is to clarify how the permission and inspection processes work.”
Calling for an urgent meeting for the acceptance of the research proposal in the parliament, İncirli demanded that all documents be made transparent. She directed clear questions to the state regarding the ship inspection processes. Along with these questions, she expressed that they were awaiting the government’s responses on this matter.
More specifically, İncirli inquired about the technical and administrative reasons for the ship’s withdrawal from service. She stated that details such as what controls the ship underwent before resuming operations should be clarified. She also requested information about who is responsible for the current situation and the inspections conducted in the past.
İncirli noted that she asked questions specifically regarding when the inspections were conducted, querying, “What do the inspection activity reports from the last five years indicate?” The proposal for the investigation also indicated the need to examine the damages in the ship’s history and who supervised the maintenance and repair processes.
Stressing the need to set out the events during the maritime accident and the chronology of the durations experienced, İncirli criticized how well various institutions were informed about this process. She questioned the time of the first aid call made on the day of the disaster, as well as the details of the rescue operation.
