European Council President Antonio Costa met with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Hristodulidis during his visit to Southern Cyprus. The focus of the meeting was particularly on the Schengen issue. The two leaders convened at the presidential palace in Nicosia as part of Costa’s visit ahead of upcoming European Council meetings.
Following the meeting, Hristodulidis expressed his willingness to participate in a broader conference related to the Cyprus issue. He called on the UN Secretary-General to convene a meeting aimed at resuming negotiations. Regarding Schengen, he emphasized Cyprus’s desire for full membership and asserted that the island is prepared for this step.
Referring to the European Commission’s assessment of the country’s situation, Hristodulidis pointed out the necessity of completing this process first. In this context, he underscored Cyprus’s enthusiasm for integration into the European Union.
European Council President Antonio Costa also emphasized their readiness to positively contribute to resolving the Cyprus issue. Costa stated their commitment not only to strengthening the EU’s relations with Turkey but also to supporting efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem.
Costa mentioned that both he and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have communicated these efforts to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. He highlighted that Brussels could play a crucial role in solving the Cyprus problem and stressed their readiness to provide support during the resolution process.
