United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is set to hold a significant meeting with Special Representative Maria Angela Holguin in New York. The aim is to review preparations concerning the ongoing issues in Cyprus and to lay the groundwork for a new process. This meeting underscores Guterres’s focus and commitment to the Cyprus issue.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric noted that Holguin will meet with Guterres ahead of her visit to Cyprus. Dujarric expressed that this visit reflects the UN’s continued engagement with the Cyprus problem. This situation is seen as a sign that Holguin is fulfilling Guterres’s directives regarding Cyprus.
Holguin is expected to be in Cyprus in the first half of September. During her visit, she is likely to bring along a record of the points of agreement between the two sides. According to a report in Haravgi newspaper, these agreements have been compiled by Canadian UN official John McGarry.
Additionally, it is emphasized that the document in question should be presented to the parties, and they need to express their views. It has been suggested that the next meeting of negotiators will take place on September 7, 2026, while discussions among the leaders are proposed for September 9, 2026.
Dujarric stated that serious negotiations must take place in preparation for the upcoming 5+1 format meeting regarding the Cyprus problem. This statement is viewed as a significant step to ensure that negotiations proceed in a more coherent manner.
