Search and rescue efforts are progressing through deep-sea operations to find the 20 individuals missing from the shipwreck off the coast of Kyrenia. Two ships sent with the support of the Republic of Turkey will contribute to these efforts. President Tufan Erhürman announced that one of these ships is equipped with robotic technology capable of descending to a depth of 1,000 meters.
The incident occurred when a passenger ship operating the Girne-Taşucu route capsized. Of the 267 passengers on board, 239 were rescued, while 8 lost their lives. 20 people remain missing. Among the injured, 19 are receiving necessary treatment in hospitals. Search operations are being conducted 24/7 from land, sea, and air to overcome all obstacles.
Special Technology for Deep-Sea Operations
President Erhürman emphasized the importance of the ships coming from Turkey for locating the missing, particularly since the wreck was found deeper than expected. Reports suggest the accident occurred at a depth of 514 meters, where it is noted that it is challenging for divers to operate, making the assistance of advanced technology ships critical.
Erhürman added, “We hope that the abilities of the ships arriving from Turkey will make this operation more effective.”
Names of Missing Individuals Released
The identities of the missing individuals have also become a matter of interest, with names including Ferdi Törer, Mustafa Demir, Mahmut Demir, Özgür Gönül, Anni Azel Hilaloğlu, and Şerif Özdemir among others being announced. Search efforts to locate these individuals continue uninterrupted.
In connection with the incident, it has been reported that a legal process has been initiated along with an administrative investigation. Erhürman stated that various claims regarding the incident are being assessed and that the public will be informed in due course.
Additionally, Erhürman noted that the ship’s black box has not yet been reached, indicating this will be an essential source of information for future proceedings.
