The identities of the eight victims who died in the maritime tragedy during the Girne–Taşucu ferry route have been revealed. One of the most tragic stories of this incident is that of Jandarma Sergeant Fahri Ateş. Ateş descended to the lower deck to retrieve life vests for his family but was unable to return.
In addition to Fahri Ateş, the other deceased individuals have been identified as Nihat Balyemez, Hüseyin Özdemir, Nuray Zeytun, Gülcan Gürel, Reyhan Verim, Nisa Torer, and Nurcan Hilaloğlu. Following the tragedy, it has been reported that the bodies of the deceased are being delivered to their families.
Some of the funerals will be held in the hometowns of those who passed away. For example, Gülcan Gürel’s body will be sent to Güneykent in the Toroslar district, Fahri Ateş’s body will be taken to Erdemli, Hüseyin Özdemir’s body will go to Silifke, and Reyhan Verim’s body will be laid to rest in central Mersin. Additionally, Nihat Balyemez’s body has been sent to Gaziantep following the completion of autopsy procedures in North Cyprus.
Fahri Ateş’s wife and child survived the incident and are currently receiving treatment in the hospital. Notably, it has come to attention that Ateş, who served in Istanbul, had come to Cyprus for a vacation after being transferred to Erdemli in Mersin with his nurse wife.
This incident reveals the painful situations experienced following the tragedy. Ateş displayed an act of heroism by sacrificing his life for his family. In addition to the funeral ceremonies to be held for the families of the victims of this maritime accident, investigations into the details of the incident are ongoing.
