Rescue Operations Continue Unabated
In a maritime incident in Cyprus, it was reported that 249 out of 267 individuals have been reached. President Tufan Erhürman stated that efforts are still underway for the eight individuals who lost their lives. The statement regarding the situation was made following a crisis meeting held at the Command of the Naval Forces.
It was reported that Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, along with several ministers and members of parliament, attended the meeting. Erhürman expressed that the identities of four of the deceased have been confirmed, while efforts are ongoing for the identification of the other four. He emphasized that this situation has deeply affected everyone, stating, “Our condolences to all, and I wish a speedy recovery for all of us.”
Day and Night Rescue Operations Ongoing
Erhürman announced that rescue operations are continuing with the resources of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and support from Turkey. He indicated that four ships, two night-vision helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are operating continuously throughout the night. “These efforts will continue unceasingly until we reach the last person,” he stated.
Erhürman also reported that a police investigation has been initiated regarding the eight members of the ship’s crew, who have been detained, and emphasized that a detailed examination of the causes of the incident is being conducted. He underscored that it is not the time for speculation or assumptions at this stage.
The President mentioned that all these efforts are being made to support the families of the missing persons and the community, and added that the relevant institutions are continuing their work without any delay.
