The FİLOJET, a catamaran passenger ship, capsized off the coast of Kyrenia, becoming the scene of a horrific accident. The FİLOJET, registered under the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus flag, belongs to the passenger-passenger cargo ship category according to maritime records. The ship’s width is recorded at 10.4 meters, and its length is approximately 40 meters. The vessel was built by the French company Iris Catamarans and was previously known as IRIS JET.
The ship is classified as a fast transportation vehicle, with previous technical records indicating a passenger capacity of 346 people. These characteristics of the FİLOJET have drawn even more attention following the accident.
Recent Inspections and Causes of the Accident
Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı announced that the FİLOJET was inspected just two months prior to the accident. The inspection was conducted by a reputable firm called Türk Loydu at the “Mediterranean” shipyard. Arıklı emphasized the need to examine the black box to understand why the ship capsized.
Arıklı stated that the ship began taking on water at a startling speed and sank within a short period of time, stressing the critical importance of investigating the causes of the accident. Additionally, rescue operations continue in an effort to locate the missing passengers.
