Alexey Shokpa, a 43-year-old Russian citizen sought under a Red Notice, is the prime suspect in the brutal murder of Vangelis Zampounis, who was killed in Athens on January 14, 2024. After residing in South Cyprus for nearly a year, Shokpa reportedly crossed into North Cyprus, where he hid in a villa in Esentepe.
Police successfully tracked down Shokpa, conducting a successful operation. His covert trips between a military restricted zone near Ercan Airport and South Cyprus were observed, leading to his arrest and subsequent appearance in court, where he was remanded in custody for three days. Greek authorities are expected to request his extradition.
Trails of the Zampounis Assassination Found
The assassination of Zampounis has severely shaken organized crime circles in Greece, with traces of this incident extending as far as Cyprus. Shokpa’s presence in South Cyprus over the past year is seen as a significant development by Greek authorities, who have long sought him. If his guilt is established, his extradition to Greece could happen swiftly.
The suspect remained in Cyprus until July 2025, living at two different addresses. Police noted he stayed in Northern Cyprus for 389 days without permission, while indicating that he carried out his crossings to South Cyprus secretively. This situation prompted a mandatory investigation by the Cypriot police.
Illegal Crossing and Arrest Process
Shokpa admitted to making illegal crossings to South Cyprus from the vicinity of Ercan Airport. In response, police decided to increase inspections, particularly in areas prone to such illegal crossings. The suspect, facing charges of violating a first-degree military restricted area and unauthorized entry, will remain detained by police for three days.
A detailed investigation is currently underway regarding the duration of the suspect’s stay in Northern Cyprus and whether he has been involved in any other crimes during this period. Before the extradition process to Greece begins, all actions taken by the suspect will be examined within the framework of this investigation.
