A man was caught at the border attempting to buy a fishing boat with $3,000 in counterfeit U.S. dollars in Gazimağusa. H.Ö. (48) was detained at the Beyarmudu Border Gate while trying to cross into Southern Cyprus. The incident occurred on July 28, 2026, and the suspect is accused of committing fraud by using counterfeit money in a marketplace transaction.
Details of the Incident
Police stated that H.Ö. attempted to purchase the boat by paying with 30 counterfeit banknotes he had unlawfully obtained. After the police were informed of the incident, an investigation was launched, leading to the identification of the suspect and the issuance of an arrest warrant.
H.Ö. was apprehended during a routine check at the Beyarmudu Border Gate on August 21. Police officer Hasan Emiroğlu reported to the court that H.Ö. had been arrested.
Investigation Ongoing
The police announced that the counterfeit $3,000 banknotes have been sent for examination and that the investigation is ongoing. Additional time was requested for the investigation to proceed thoroughly against H.Ö., and the court granted this request, ruling that the suspect should remain in custody for 2 days.
