France’s involvement in the “Great Sea Interconnector (GSI)” project in South Cyprus has been reported as a positive development for the region. Cypriot Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letimbiotis highlighted the participation of the French company Meridiam in the project, stating that this would strengthen the technical, geopolitical, and diplomatic dimensions of the connection.
Letimbiotis praised the project investment and contributions from French President Emmanuel Macron, noting that Meridiam’s participation with a 66% stake adds significant value to the project. He regarded this as a positive development from both a technical and geopolitical perspective, emphasizing that France’s involvement would bolster the negotiating positions of Cyprus and Greece.
Letimbiotis also underscored that, in addition to South Cyprus, the GSI holds a broader European significance, stating that the project is among the energy connectivity priorities of the European Union. This underlines the strategic importance of the GSI.
Additionally, Letimbiotis emphasized that President Nikos Christodoulides of the Cypriot Administration had discussions with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Macron prior to the announcement of the GSI shareholders. He stated that these meetings aimed to ensure high-level coordination for a project of strategic priority.
In response to a question regarding Turkey’s potential reactions as the project progresses, Letimbiotis noted that both governments are primarily pursuing diplomatic avenues. He stressed their determination to protect Cyprus’s sovereign rights.
In this context, France’s involvement in the project holds the potential to alter the energy dynamics in the region, and developments will be closely monitored.
