A theft incident occurred at the Jumbo shopping center in Larnaca. Turkish Cypriot businessman Hasan Caner lost nearly 650,000 TL while shopping in the parking lot of this center. Upon returning to the TRNC, Caner realized that the money in his bag was missing and immediately reported it to the police.
Caner detailed the events that unfolded on a Sunday when he had traveled to South Cyprus with his family. After having dinner with his family, he stated that they locked the car doors after shopping at the Jumbo shopping center at 6:00 PM before heading back. However, upon returning to his business in Famagusta, he discovered that 50,000 TL, 7,000 Sterling, 1,200 Euros, and 1,300 Dollars were missing from his bag.
Caner was the first to report the incident to the Famagusta Police Department and received information that his money was not stolen from his own establishment following an investigation. To clarify the situation, he went back to South Cyprus and filed a complaint at the police station.
He also mentioned that he noticed his wife’s wallet was missing and emphasized that they were certain this incident occurred in the parking area of the Jumbo shopping center. However, during their discussion with the Greek police, they were surprised to learn that there were no security cameras in the shopping center’s parking lot.
Caner noted that the Greek police informed them that theft incidents frequently occur in this area, and he considered the lack of cameras in the parking lot of a large store a scandal regarding insufficient security. This raised alarm bells for both himself and other visitors concerning the inadequacy of protection.
Caner explained that the significant amount of money involved related to vehicle registration, customs fees, and revenues from private organizations, emphasizing that the theft of this money posed a major problem. He stressed that shopping centers must be more cautious, especially given the increasing number of such incidents.
Finally, Hasan Caner expressed that the theft incident serves as a warning not just for himself but also for other citizens. He stated that the absence of security cameras in large places like the Jumbo shopping center carries serious concerns and urged the public to remain vigilant.
Caner pointed out that more security measures need to be taken against theft incidents and emphasized that every store and shopping center should enforce strict security standards.
