Mayor of Girne, Murat Şenkul, highlighted the negative impacts of political debates brought on by the upcoming election period on himself and municipal employees. Şenkul emphasized that recent criticisms have targeted workers, which he categorically cannot accept. He noted that such slurs disregard the efforts of individuals to sustain their daily lives.
After 48 years of life and 3.5 years of serving as mayor, Şenkul expressed that he has not remained silent in the face of criticisms aimed at him. He asserted that it is unacceptable for the criticisms to focus on municipal employees rather than himself. He pointed out that comments regarding the conditions of his employees could lead society to perceive workers as guilty.
Şenkul stated that due to economic hardships, some municipal employees are compelled to take on additional jobs alongside their primary responsibilities. “Instead of questioning these people’s need to take on side jobs, portraying them as guilty is certainly not my viewpoint,” he remarked. The mayor believes that this workforce is merely seeking ways to provide for their families, and that respect for this situation is essential.
Regarding the mentioned allegations, he requested that if there are any data indicating that a municipal employee has acted outside of three specified rules, this information should be communicated to the appropriate authorities. Şenkul also assured that necessary investigations would be conducted to prevent any unjust complaints.
Murat Şenkul reminded that approximately 650 staff members work at the Girne Municipality, emphasizing that protecting the rights of all employees is one of the municipality’s primary responsibilities. He underscored the need to build a reliable structure regarding this matter.
Şenkul declared that it is unfair to involve the staff of the Water Infrastructure Department, who work under intense heat especially in the summer months, in these discussions, stating that such publications are made irresponsibly. He asserted that the goal should be not to overlook the working conditions of the workers but rather to enhance their value.
In conclusion, he warned those expressing these grievances to be more careful. “They will find themselves unable to see the true efforts of the individuals they are targeting,” he stated.
