Security Threats from the North

Security Threats from the North

Recent events in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus have sparked discussions about the region’s security situation. Experts emphasize that this security crisis stems not only from personal crimes but also from the prevailing governance mentality in the area.

Origins of Security Issues

At the heart of the debates lies the political framework planned right next to the Republic of Turkey. Critics point out that Turkey’s strict governance has created a dependency that deepens the security vulnerability in Northern Cyprus. The prevailing mentality of “We saved you, we can enter as we wish” proves inadequate in ensuring safety.

Identity Control Issues

The difficulty faced by the authorities in Northern Cyprus in managing identity checks at the border further exacerbates the issue. Citizens express their desire to know who is entering the country. Individuals entering with a Republic of Turkey identity card are able to come to the island without any checks, which, coupled with the rising crime rates, exacerbates the situation. Interventions of this nature, as per modern security practices, increase unrest in the region.

Indeed, the security threat observed in the last fifteen years is characterized not by challenges from the south but by chaos created by those coming from the north. Incidents, such as the fatal attack on a young father of two and the stabbing of a woman, are concrete examples of this rising concern. It is emphasized that crime should not be confused with nationality. While crime does not have an identity, the attitudes of political administrations must absolutely be criticized.

Managing Perception and Solutions

It can be said that some groups still attempt to adhere to customs and traditions while addressing the existing problems. Those advocating for separate solutions seem to be engaged in maintaining the aforementioned agenda. Defining every individual coming from Turkey merely as a “tourist” undermines the responsibility of ensuring safety.

In conclusion, the security gap in Northern Cyprus is a consequence of a specific governance mentality. Only when we find answers to questions about who is coming and why they are here can we establish true security. Free will and independent governance can contribute to the resolution of such issues.
