Families preparing for the 2026-2027 school year express that they are facing tough times due to the high prices of clothing and stationery supplies. It has been reported that shopping before the schools reopen on September 7 for private schools and September 14 for public schools under the Ministry of Education is straining parents’ budgets.
Parents are reportedly struggling to complete the shopping lists provided by the school administration. Some parents speaking to our correspondent mentioned that the expenses for a single child vary between 30,000 to 40,000 TL. It has been emphasized that low-income families are experiencing significant difficulties meeting these expenses.
Parents emphasize the need to support students in need, stating that the spirit of solidarity has become even more important during this crisis period. Families expressed their discomfort due to the high prices.
Statements from Parents
Mine Kayahan, expressing her financial difficulties, mentioned that her 11-year-old child’s stationery expenses reached 18,000 TL, excluding clothing. She stated that the annual school fee for her child attending a private school is 600,000 TL, highlighting their challenging financial situation.
Şenay Asena noted that the stationery expenses for her child preparing for primary school are covered by the school, but the total clothing and other expenses would reach 40,000 TL.
Naciye Deniz emphasized that the total school expenses for her two children would amount to 60,000 TL, stating that it is extremely difficult for families living on minimum wage to cope with such expenses.
Impact of Rising Costs
Hayat Tabancıoğlu reported that the stationery costs for her child entering the seventh grade would reach 10,000 TL, with the total expenses including uniforms amounting to 25,000 TL. Özge Çoskun stated she had to spend 15,000 TL for school uniforms, struggling with the high prices.
Hıvsıye Öztoprak indicated she spent 14,000 TL to cover her older son’s school expenses and added that the total expense would increase with her younger son’s costs. Esra Tülek mentioned she paid 25,000 TL for clothing and stationery supplies for her only child. Gizem İğneci pointed out that the uniform alone costs 13,000 TL, and the school will cover the stationery expenses.
