Parliament Speaker Ziya Öztürkler expressed that the decisions made by the Cabinet will play a key role in determining the election date. He noted that the process for the elections scheduled for later in 2026 has begun and that the situation will become clear soon.
During his statements on the “Agenda 12” program aired on BRT, Öztürkler recalled that an extraordinary session of the General Assembly was called at the request of CTP and independent members of parliament. He stated that the reasons for the government’s absence from the meeting were also shared with the public.
Security Priority and Developments in Election Matters
Öztürkler highlighted the special importance he places on security issues and noted that they are observing the events occurring while the police force continues its operations. He emphasized that the common ground is peace and security, announcing that these issues will be re-evaluated by the Assembly in the future.
Stating that the government’s work regarding the Election and Referendum Law has gained speed, Öztürkler said that the main agenda is the abolishment of the mixed voting system. He expressed that the scope of the proposed law is limited and that the election date will be determined by an independent decision of the Assembly.
Reiterating that the determination of the election calendar is dependent on the Cabinet’s decisions, Öztürkler mentioned that he believes DP and YDP will also share their decisions with the public after evaluating them in their authorized bodies. He noted that there are unresolved points in the process and that everything will become clear in a short time.
Assembly Work and Budget Matters
Öztürkler stated that the Assembly committees will begin their work as soon as possible, with this process being led by Committee Chairman Yasemi Öztürk. He also mentioned that the Finance Ministry is currently conducting work with the government regarding the 2027 budget and that it would be more appropriate for the budget to be handed over to the new Assembly and government.
Drawing attention to the fact that the summer heat affects election activities, Öztürkler expressed his anticipation that political parties’ efforts will accelerate with the arrival of September. He also pointed out the importance of the political language’s impact on society and emphasized that politicians have a duty to set an example for the community, advising that they should avoid using slang and hurtful expressions.
