Tacan Reynar, the Secretary of Legal and Legislative Development of the People’s Democratic Party (TDP), announced the number of individuals released from prison on parole in the last five years during a public statement. Reynar revealed that based on data obtained from the Central Prison Directorate under the Freedom of Information Law, exactly 1,433 individuals have regained their freedom through such parole procedures.

In his statement, Reynar noted that while the number of individuals released is quite high, this situation is not encouraging for society. He emphasized the composition of the Parole Board, pointing out that there is only one legal expert involved in the decision-making processes.

According to Article 8 of the Parole Regulations, Reynar stated that the board consists of seven members, but only one of them is a legal expert. The board includes the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior, the Chair of the Prison Advisory Board or a representative appointed by them, a prosecutor appointed by the Chief Public Prosecutor, the first or second deputy of the Chief of Police, the Director of the Central Prison or their deputy, the highest-ranking psychologist on duty at the central prison, and the Director or deputy of the Social Services Department. Reynar argues that this structure does not allow for a sufficiently fair assessment.
This announcement has reignited discussions about how the parole process works and the transparency of decision-making processes. Reynar’s criticisms also bring to light concerns within society regarding the justice system.
