John Breslow, the new US Ambassador to Cyprus, is preparing to arrive on the island to present his letter of credence to Nikos Hristodulidis, the President of the South Cyprus Greek Administration, in the coming days. During his visit to the capital Nicosia, Breslow’s role will involve creating a foundation to continue the momentum gained in US-South Cyprus relations during his predecessor Julie Davis’s term. Among the primary issues that need to be addressed during Breslow’s tenure is the inclusion of South Cyprus in the US Visa Waiver Program. According to the newspaper, South Cyprus has largely met the technical criteria in this area. However, it is noted that no definitive timeline has been established as the US is reviewing the program.
Another crucial matter is the potential permanence of the US arms embargo imposed on Cyprus. A proposed bill titled the “Cyprus Arms Embargo Repeal Act” aimed at lifting the embargo has yet to be approved by the US Congress, which continues to keep the situation uncertain.
