Daily Struggles Against Violence in Northern Cyprus

For many people, each new day starts with the joy and peace of returning home safely. However, this peace is often overshadowed by feelings of violence and insecurity. Residents of Northern Cyprus consider it a success to have gotten through another day without harm, but the challenges behind this situation are becoming increasingly evident.

Social Violence and the Situation of Women

Life is becoming increasingly difficult for women in Northern Cyprus. Research shows that 48 women have lost their lives due to violence since 2001. In the vast majority of these cases, the perpetrator is often one of the closest men in the woman’s life: spouses, ex-husbands, boyfriends, or family members. This reality underscores the seriousness of the violence faced by women living in the region.

On the other hand, it is noted that young people and children also grapple with similar emotional challenges. The stress of having to live without maturing into adulthood is just one of the factors making life difficult. Living in an unsafe environment stands out as a significant factor that leaves individuals feeling helpless.

Sociopolitical Stagnation and the Situation of Foreigners

The sociopolitical stagnation, which poses a significant threat to the future of the community, is also causing a decrease in tourist arrivals to the northern part of the island. How feasible is it to implement an inspection system that meets European Union standards under the current political conditions? In addition to this question, the ambiguity surrounding who is truly local or foreign creates another perplexing issue. The question of who is who in the country has turned into a riddle that is hard to solve.

In this environment, where the residential arrangements and definitions have become complex, it has become a puzzle for the local population to manage integration. Not belonging anywhere leaves people with a profound sense of loneliness both mentally and socially. The boundaries between the roles of foreigners and locals are becoming blurred, leading to an inevitable sense of alienation.

Despite the growing chaos and loss of balance in their lives, those living in Northern Cyprus repeatedly remind themselves that they are managing to survive amidst this uncertainty. For many, saying, “I wasn’t victimized today” is considered a victory. Each new day transforms into another struggle in this complex world.

In conclusion, social violence, insecurity, and uncertainty lurk around every corner. However, individuals continue to strive to stay strong, feel happy, and hold onto hope despite these challenging circumstances.
