The 104th anniversary of August 30, a pivotal moment in Turkey’s struggle for independence marked by the victory of the Great Offensive, was celebrated with various events in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Spectacular ceremonies took place in front of the Atatürk Monument in Nicosia and along Dr. Fazıl Küçük Boulevard. However, some celebrations were canceled due to a ship accident that occurred off the coast of Kyrenia.
Notable figures attending the ceremony at the Atatürk Monument included TRNC President Tufan Erhürman, President of the Republic Assembly Ziya Öztürkler, and Prime Minister Ünal Üstel. Additionally, Turkey’s Ambassador to Nicosia, Ali Murat Başçeri, and Commander of the Turkish Peace Forces in Cyprus, General Ertan İnaltekin, were also present.
The ceremony began with the laying of wreaths in order of protocol, followed by a moment of silence. Flags were raised to the sound of the National Anthem. At the event, President Erhürman, Ambassador Başçeri, and General İnaltekin signed the Special Memorial Book, concluding the ceremony.
In his message, President Erhürman emphasized that the Victory of August 30 is a turning point that changed the course of history. He expressed the determination of the Turkish Cypriot people to uphold their freedom, security, and future.
Ambassador Başçeri stated that the Great Offensive and the Commander-in-Chief’s Battle of Dumlupınar were won through the unity and solidarity of the Turkish nation. He noted that Turkey continues to aim for progress in many areas.
General İnaltekin remarked that the Victory of August 30 demonstrated the Turkish nation’s will for independence to the world, asserting that the Turkish army will continue to ensure security in the region.
Parade Ceremony
As part of the Victory Day celebrations, a parade was organized on Dr. Fazıl Küçük Boulevard. The ceremony included an inspection of the parade units by President Tufan Erhürman, who congratulated the public on the holiday. At 10:00 AM, the flags were raised alongside the National Anthem.
Lieutenant Seyhan Gökçe Dağılan from the 39th Mechanized Infantry Division delivered a speech highlighting the significance of the day. He stated that the victory achieved on August 30, 1922, was a result of the Turkish nation’s struggle for independence.
District Ceremonies Canceled
On the other hand, due to a loss of life resulting from the capsizing of a passenger ship off the coast of Kyrenia, the planned 30 August Victory Day events in the districts were canceled. Additionally, a reception intended to be held at the Embassy by Turkey’s Ambassador Ali Murat Başçeri was also canceled for the same reason.
