Preparations have begun for the leaders’ meeting scheduled for August 26. During the meeting between President Tufan Erhürman and Greek Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, it is reported that the proposals regarding border crossings by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will be addressed.
According to a report by Fileleftheros newspaper, it is expected that negotiators from both sides will meet before the meeting. This discussion will include topics referred to as “homework” left by Guterres before departing from the island. Notably, the opening of new crossing points is expected to be a significant agenda item.
It is stated that the goal was to reach an agreement between the leaders during Guterres’ visit to the island, but this did not materialize. Initially, it is claimed that Erhürman did not exhibit a negative attitude towards Guterres’ proposals, but later opposed them. The newspaper highlights that Erhürman has changed his stance regarding the issue.
During his visit to Cyprus, UN Secretary-General Guterres had suggested the opening of new crossing points at Haspolat and Kiracikoy. It is noted that his proposal regarding Kiracikoy is a variation of ideas he presented last year in New York.
Before the meeting, it is indicated that the negotiators will come together on Thursday. The outcomes of this meeting could have a significant impact on cooperation between the two communities and regarding the crossing points.
