The Chairman of YDP and Minister of Public Works and Transport, Erhan Arıklı, announced that they will not participate in CTP’s emergency meeting regarding security issues. In a statement made via social media, Arıklı evaluated the background of CTP’s call.
He stated that despite some security issues in the TRNC, it remains one of the safest places among many countries, including Southern Cyprus. Emphasizing that security is a sensitive issue that requires a more careful approach, Arıklı criticized the approach set for the meeting.
Noting that security matters can be based on numerical data, Arıklı criticized the unjust questioning of the security perception of the TRNC, particularly as a country prominent in tourism and higher education, adding that this situation has created a negative image.
Arıklı expressed the belief that the purposes of the meeting are largely focused on show and populism, asserting that security issues should be discussed in a more appropriate manner through the Republic Security Council. He suggested that CTP’s main opposition leader should request the Security Council to convene a meeting with the President.
Clearly stating that YDP will not participate in the emergency meeting brought forth as a CTP project, he argued that this represents an irresponsible and populist approach. “We announce to the public that we will not attend the meeting,” he said.
Various comments regarding the meeting continue to keep it on the political agenda. Arıklı’s attitudes and statements have become targets of criticism, leading to a broader discussion of YDP’s policies.
The meeting, planned to take place in parliament today, was expected to create a platform for the parties to discuss their views and suggestions on security issues. However, YDP’s absence may hinder the discussion of the security agenda.
