The Chamber of Geological Engineers (YMO) announced that comprehensive scientific studies are required to minimize earthquake-related damages, emphasizing that Cyprus is situated on active tectonic processes. In a statement made on the anniversary of the August 17, 1999 Marmara Earthquake, it was noted that earthquakes can turn into disasters due to human decisions. The importance of information, effective planning, and engineering was underlined.
The statement highlighted that the evaluation of structural resilience, soil conditions, and site selection in the area should be considered together. It was stressed that accurately identifying the surrounding tectonic structures is crucial for creating safe settlement areas. Therefore, it was emphasized that field studies and the correct interpretation of the obtained data are essential.
Cyprus’ Tectonic Structure
It was expressed that Cyprus is a region where seismic activities continue, along with the surrounding Cyprus Arc and other active tectonic structures. YMO noted that this situation has historically led to significant earthquakes. Although the exact timing of an earthquake cannot be determined, it was stated that it is possible to identify which regions are at greater risk.
It was conveyed that a detailed analysis of local seismic characteristics and soil conditions is necessary. In this context, it is essential to conduct region-specific seismic hazard assessments and clarify design parameters.
The Importance of Scientific Studies
YMO emphasized the necessity of developing scientific studies related to the current earthquake hazard and strengthening the earthquake observation and monitoring infrastructure. It also highlighted the need to update geological and geophysical data, indicating that these studies should be current and systematic.
In particular, it was stated that the earthquake safety of hospitals, schools, and other critical infrastructure facilities should be assessed. The extent of necessary research regarding the safety of the existing building stock should be expanded.
Lastly, it was said that cooperation among the government, local administrations, universities, and the engineering sector is of great importance. It was emphasized that not only the sharing of scientific knowledge but also the continuity of the decisions made is essential.
YMO asserted that earthquake-related losses can be prevented, stating that this relies on a scientific and conscious approach. They pointed out that information deficits increase fears in their calls.
