Need to Raise Insurance Awareness
Seniha Çukurovalı, a member of the Board of Directors at Zirve Insurance, expressed the necessity to enhance insurance awareness in northern Cyprus and update the current insurance system. Çukurovalı emphasized that challenges should be kept on the societal agenda not only during certain times of the year but continuously. In this context, she stated that the scope of mandatory insurance needs to be expanded.
She also highlighted the importance of ensuring policy checks during vehicle transfers and underscored the need for a clear responsibility model for electric scooters. Çukurovalı urged society to consider insurance from a broader perspective, rather than only recognizing insurance products during times of loss.
Scope of Mandatory Insurance Products Should Be Expanded
In addition to raising insurance awareness, Çukurovalı argued that the existing types of mandatory insurance should also be re-evaluated. She noted that compared to Turkey’s insurance policies, there are only four types of mandatory insurance in northern Cyprus. Given that Turkey has an average of 12 mandatory insurance products, she said this discrepancy leads to significant gaps in the economic and professional fields.
Çukurovalı pointed out the necessity of identifying new mandatory coverage areas that are suitable and applicable to the country, particularly taking into account the EU-compliant approaches from southern Cyprus. In this context, regular informational activities and developing financial literacy starting from schools are essential for increasing social solidarity.
Çukurovalı stressed that, in addition to updating the insurance system, there should be a merger of navigation, inspection, and transfer records on a single platform through digital systems in Cyprus. She indicated that this could help establish a system that prevents uninsured vehicles from being used on the road.
Finally, addressing uncertainties regarding accidents involving electric scooters, Çukurovalı stated that there is a need for social dialogue and the development of a mandatory responsibility model on this matter.
In conclusion, she called on insurance companies, the public, professional organizations, and universities to collaborate. Çukurovalı remarked, “The primary objective should not only be to sell more policies but also to enhance the resilience of society.”
