Students from the Near East University (YDÜ) Faculty of Medicine had the opportunity to participate in international exchange programs during the summer months, receiving clinical training in 24 different countries. This process not only represented northern Cyprus on an international platform but also reinforced YDÜ’s vision for education and research.
While YDÜ hosts international students on its campus, it also provides its own students with education and career opportunities, allowing them to experience different cultures. Additionally, through the programs, students engage in various projects such as the Clinical Exchange Program (SCOPE) and the Research Exchange Program (SCORE) under the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA), gaining both scientific knowledge and practical experience.
Opportunities Provided by the Exchange Program
The North Cyprus Medical Students Association (MSANC), established under the leadership of Near East University, coordinates the programs conducted. Throughout the summer, 24 students participated in these exchange programs, engaging in clinical internships and scientific research projects. Moreover, seven students from Girne University also benefited from the program.
Participants received comprehensive additional training at universities, teaching hospitals, and research centers in countries such as Germany, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Czech Republic, and Indonesia. They not only observed the healthcare systems in these countries firsthand but also had the opportunity to experience various clinical practices.
Cultural and Professional Development
The exchange programs were not limited to academic gains. Students had the chance to learn about different cultures, establish international connections, and expand their professional networks. This way, future physicians are cultivated as individuals with high cultural awareness and openness to international collaboration.
The Dean of Students at YDÜ, Prof. Dr. Dudu Özkum Yavuz, emphasized the importance of the programs, stating that they provide a striking opportunity to observe international healthcare systems. She noted that the university’s internationalization goals are continuously growing each year through these exchange programs.
Prof. Yavuz remarked, “Our students closely experience global healthcare understanding and develop their skills in international collaboration by interacting with different cultures.” She also expressed her gratitude to everyone who has supported the initiative, including the Chair of the Board of Trustees, Prof. Dr. İrfan Suat Günsel, and the Rector, Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ.
Finally, highlighting the pride felt in YDÜ medical students representing the university and northern Cyprus in various regions of the world, she emphasized the importance of such international experiences in education.
