CTP Calls for Extraordinary Parliamentary Session
The Cumhuriyetçi Türk Partisi (CTP) has called for an extraordinary session of the Cumhuriyet Meclisi General Assembly to discuss the rising crime rates and security vulnerabilities in Northern Cyprus. The party plans to bring this request to the agenda in their meeting scheduled for Monday. The call for the meeting was formally submitted to the Parliament Speaker Ziya Öztürkler through a petition.
CTP Chair Sıla Usar İncirli highlighted that the inadequacy of security policies is not only a policing issue but also reflects a lack of political will. İncirli emphasized that the state authority has been undermined in the face of security vulnerabilities in the country.
Source of the Problem: Lack of Political Will
Sıla Usar İncirli noted that institutions have lost their oversight authority. She remarked that the long-standing structural problems have created serious pressure for the country, insisting that security policies must be implemented comprehensively. Furthermore, she observed the weakening of state authority, which has led to people entering the country disregarding state will.
Despite the police department’s success in combating crime, İncirli emphasized significant weaknesses in preventive measures. She argued that to curb the rising crime rates, the entry of individuals prone to crime into the country should be prevented, stating that the existing mechanisms are inadequate.
Continuing her remarks, she pointed out that while the success rates of police in apprehending criminals after offenses are notable, there are deficiencies in preventing crimes before they occur. Concerns regarding illegal activities have become widespread among the public.
The CTP Chair indicated that they have attempted to communicate with Prime Minister Ünal Üstel to discuss these matters but have been unsuccessful. She stressed that these issues are not just policing matters but direct political issues. Additionally, she underscored the importance of holding the extraordinary meeting and expressed a desire to address all deficiencies.
During the upcoming meeting in Parliament, it was stated that, if necessary, legal changes will be discussed, and solutions will be proposed. Sıla Usar İncirli noted that the upcoming meeting represents a significant opportunity for updating security policies.
