Increase of Uncontrolled Areas
Serhat Akpınar noted the emergence of uncontrolled areas in mountainous and forested regions, such as unused and unfinished constructions and abandoned buildings. He stressed that police inspections in these areas must be increased.
Akpınar, who is the General Secretary of the Democratic Party (DP) and a Member of Parliament for Girne, called for the creation of a “Map of Dark Spots and Risky Areas” in northern Cyprus. He expressed that necessary security measures should be implemented alongside this map.
Areas Vulnerable to Criminal Activities
In a written statement, Akpınar argued that various public institutions, especially the General Directorate of Police and municipalities, need to initiate coordinated efforts regarding this issue. He emphasized that abandoned or forgotten areas should no longer be neglected.
Akpınar pointed out that these uncontrolled points could pose risks for criminal activities, such as alcohol and drug use, exploitation, and prostitution. He proposed that these areas need to be systematically identified to prevent potential issues.
He expressed the necessity of adopting a proactive approach to protect young people from law and order problems, stating that public safety policies need to be developed to mitigate potential risks.
Furthermore, Akpınar suggested the establishment of a reporting hotline to involve citizens in the process and stated that abandoned and unfinished constructions should be documented and inspected for risk management.
Reminding that Girne is a city of tourism, education, and living, Akpınar stressed that the claim of the TRNC being a safe country should not remain mere words. He emphasized that the government must fulfill its responsibilities regarding streets, neighborhoods, and abandoned buildings.
