The Republican Turkish Party (CTP) has submitted a comprehensive motion to the Presidency of the Republic Assembly requesting an inquiry into the passenger ferry disaster that occurred off Girne Port on August 30, 2026. The disaster resulted in passenger losses, emphasizing the need for a thorough examination of all aspects of the incident. Based on Article 113 of the Assembly’s Internal Regulations, the motion calls for the establishment of a Parliamentary Investigation Committee.
Topics for Investigation in the Motion
The justifications of the motion suggest a range of topics to be examined regarding the causes of the accident and related processes. Among these topics is the questioning of the vessel’s seaworthiness. A detailed examination is expected regarding the technical and legal compliance of the ship named “Filo Jet” at the time of the accident.
Moreover, there are questions about which authorities granted the ship’s sailing permission and under what inspections this was done. The captain’s qualifications and the approval process for his documents have also been included in the scope of the investigation.
