The “Great Sea Interconnector” (GSI) project, which aims to establish an electricity link between South Cyprus, Israel, and Greece through underwater cables, is set to resume marine research. The agreements for the project were signed on August 5, 2026.

The newspaper Fileleftheros reported that President of the Greek Cypriot Administration Nikos Christodoulides, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and French President Emmanuel Macron held phone calls regarding the progress of the project and undersea research. The three leaders agree on the necessity of conducting marine research to determine the location of the cable connection.

Following the formation of a collaboration schedule between the French Meridiam company, the lead stakeholder in the project, and Nexans, the company responsible for manufacturing and laying the cable, Greek authorities are expected to issue a NAVTEX. NAVTEX is a communication system that provides information to mariners and will pave the way for the commencement of research.

According to Greece’s Independent Electricity Transmission Operator ADMHIE, 60% of the seabed measurements have been completed. The remaining work, particularly in the areas corresponding to Turkey’s continental shelf between Crete and South Cyprus, represents a critical phase of the project.

Additionally, according to information obtained by the newspaper, if collaboration with the Italian company NextGeo, which operates the “IEVOLI Relume” vessel, is not continued, it is likely that another French company or consortium may take over this collaboration.
