Condemning the Violence Incident
Naz Aktunç, the Secretary of the Youth Federation’s Gender Studies Desk, condemned a knife attack on a woman at a supermarket in Taşkınköy, stating that such incidents are not isolated, but rather a systematic issue with social, legal, and institutional dimensions.
In a written statement, Aktunç wished the injured woman a speedy recovery, assuring that she and her family are by her side during the treatment process.
The Global Dimension of Violence
Aktunç emphasized their opposition to all forms of violence, regardless of gender. She pointed out that perceiving violence against women as characteristic of a specific country, religion, or culture is erroneous, indicating that this shows it is a global problem.
Addressing the differences among countries regarding the prevention of violence against women and the development of related policies, Aktunç mentioned that these disparities relate to how effective states are and what kind of protection mechanisms they provide to victims.
Questioning Social Conditions
Aktunç further stated that the causes of violence against women cannot be reduced solely to the identity of the perpetrator, emphasizing the need to question the social and institutional conditions that lead to such actions. She asserted that protecting the right to life is one of the fundamental obligations of the state, and this obligation must be fulfilled effectively in situations that threaten life.
Addressing public discussions regarding the perpetrator’s nationality and immigration status, Aktunç argued that these discussions overlook the issue of violence against women.
