The Turkish Cypriot Public Servants’ Union (KTAMS), the Public Workers’ Union (KAMU-İŞ), and the Turkish Cypriot Civil Servants’ Union (KAMU-SEN) have announced their decision to initiate a strike starting from September 16. This action is presented as a measure to be taken if the issue of staffing shortages in the courts is not resolved.
KTAMS President Güven Bengihan highlighted the difficulties faced by the unions in a written statement. During a press conference held on June 12 in front of the Nicosia Criminal Court, concerns about the personnel shortages in the courts were raised. Bengihan emphasized that this situation needs to be addressed urgently and mentioned that they have given the government a timeframe to ensure necessary staffing.
Bengihan stated that they expect the government to take action to resolve the issue by September 15, and warned that if no improvements are made by that date, they will proceed with the strike. He highlighted that the government has not taken the necessary measures during the intervening period and reiterated the unions’ determination regarding this issue.
Bengihan asserted that increasing the number of staff in the courts is essential for the sustainability of public services. He indicated that preparations are underway and that they have reached the stage of initiating a strike in the courts. He expressed the seriousness of the issues faced by their members and reaffirmed their resolve to continue this struggle.
In conclusion, if the government does not resolve the issue, members of KTAMS, KAMU-İŞ, and KAMU-SEN will begin exercising their right to strike in the courts starting from September 16. This situation may lead to negative impacts on the functioning of the courts and public services.
